You know, it's interesting here. I've been preparing to record a podcast about doing the thing that requires the miracle. And I had been stuck for quite some time, just feeling busy and overwhelmed and feeling like ideas weren't coming to me. And I really wanted to get an episode up last week. And so I was like, Do you know what? I'm just going to do this. I'm talking about miracles. So why not ask for a miracle and somehow whip out this podcast in less preparation than I would like and just see what happens. So I pressed record. I recorded a whole hour of content and things were just clicking. And I was like, wow, miracle check. And then I went to go edit it. And realized that for some reason, there was no audio. I would not have time again to record this for another week. Believe me, I definitely prayed for another miracle that somehow the audio would be restored And that didn't happen. And it made me think, before I share with you all these thoughts on receiving miracles in your life, I was grateful for the reminder that sometimes when the miracle we've been asking for does not happen, it's most often because God has a greater miracle in store for you. In this last week, as I have pondered and asked the Lord if he had anything more to teach me that I might share, I've been blessed with insights that have been answer to prayer in other areas of my life. And this episode is going to be completely different than what I was originally going to share. So I hope you know with this podcast episode and any of them, I'm on this learning journey with you. I'm asking God the same questions that I offer you at the end of every podcast. And I'm so grateful that you are here. when it comes to learning about and being inspired by miracles, there is one place I love to go, the scriptures. And I noticed something really cool when I read the Book of Mormon at a very fast pace one time. Now, my first love is writing, and any writer knows that if you're writing an essay or a paper, you state your purpose at the beginning of the paper, and then you restate it and really drive it home at the end. Well, I guess Mormon was a good writer, because have you noticed that at the beginning, the very first chapter of the Book of Mormon, the purpose Of this book is stated, and at the end, it is affirmed again. If you go to First Nephi, chapter 1, verse 20, Let me read to you what it is. It says, I will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty. Even unto the power of deliverance. So this is the purpose of the Book of Mormon to show us that our God is a God miracles, of mercies, of deliverance. And if you would go all the way to the end, Moroni chapter nine, verse three, this purpose is driven home. Again, it says, I would that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men from the creation of Adam, even down until the time that ye shall receive these things and ponder it in your hearts. Not only does God want us to know of his miracles, but he wants us to ponder them, to remember them. And I believe the reason why is because he wants us to be ready for the miracles he is waiting to bring into our lives. my journey, sharing content online started actually on a blog where I shared inspiring stories. Mostly stories about tender mercies, miracles, the hand of God in people's lives. My intention was to gather stories from other people and share them. And there were plenty of people that shared. Beautiful stories. But I was surprised how often I would ask someone if they had a story of a tender mercy in their life. And their answer was that they couldn't think of anything. And where I thought I would be getting hundreds of submissions of stories, I actually didn't get that many stories. And because I made this commitment to post every week, I was like, well, I guess I better start coming up with my own stories. So I was constantly pondering what mercies and miracles I had seen in my life. And it was amazing as I started seeing things in my past that I had never realized were miracles. And even in my present, something amazing happened where, because I was constantly reflecting upon, pondering, remembering miracles, I became. The easiest way to call it would be miracle minded, where any obstacle that I was faced with every day, my instinctual knee jerk reaction was, Oh, what miracle can I ask for? And I started receiving and seeing so many more tender mercies and miracles in my life. It was a real testimony to me of what happens when we take time to focus on the tender mercies in our lives, in other people's lives and fill our mind with the stories of the scriptures. So today I want to share with you one of those stories that came to my mind during this time, something from my past that I had never seen for the miracle that it actually was. It also happened to be one of the first times in my life that I Did the thing that required a miracle and God answered I was 13 years old in the 8th grade and if you've listened to some of my past Episodes, you'll know those were some rough years for me I was definitely struggling and one of the reasons I was struggling that I haven't talked about before Was because of the kind of friends I had chosen I was in a new school and it was really hard for me to make friends. I was pretty shy, definitely an introvert, but I had made one friend. She was a fun girl that came from a rough home and was deciding whether church was a thing for her or not. And a bit of a loner like me in some ways, so we just connected. But as you know, that time of life is really interesting, at least for me. It was a time where I came to a crossroads where as I was maturing, I was thinking about the things that my parents had raised me to believe and being faced with opposition and temptation and having to decide, was I going to behave in the way that my parents taught me? Was I going to act in accordance to the principles of the gospel? Or Was I going to choose a different path? My friend was at that same place as well. And unfortunately, because she did not have that support at home, she started making some really poor decisions. And she was trying to pull me with her. And while she started to drink and smoke and do things with boys that I wasn't okay with, and trying to encourage me to do the same. it finally got to the point that I was tired of having to say no. And I felt like I needed some different influences in my life. I was grateful when our eighth grade year ended because I knew I wouldn't see her much in the summer. I lived out in the middle of nowhere. I didn't have a car. And so it gave me that space to really think about the direction I wanted to go in life and the decisions I would need to make to get there. The spirit worked on me all summer. And just a few weeks before school, I knew that I could no longer continue this friendship. But the first day of school was fast approaching. What was I going to do? I didn't have any other close friends. And for any teenager, the first day of high school is hard enough, but to go into it feeling all alone, makes it even worse. So I did the only thing that I knew how, and I prayed my heart out. And prayed for some sort of miracle, prayed for new friends, prayed for the courage to walk away from a friendship that felt safe to me. That night before school started, I still remember the fear that I felt. I didn't care what I was going to be wearing for the first day of school. Like I normally did. All I cared was that I would somehow get through the day and maybe meet a new friend. The fear showed on my face as I walked onto campus that first day of school. Instead of going right to our classes, there was a beginning of the school year assembly that everyone had to go to. My worst nightmare. When you're in a crowd, you don't want to be all by yourself. And as I walked in, two seniors looked over at me and said, Oh my goodness. Look at that scared little freshman. That didn't help, but I walked in scanning the bleachers and my thought was, maybe someone else is lonely. Maybe there's a new girl. I will find someone that looks alone and I will go sit with them, and as I scan the bleachers, the first person I saw. Was my friend sitting with her new group of friends that were making the same choices as she was. She waved at me and smiled and beckoned me over. I smiled back and waved. But I can't tell you how hard it was to just keep walking. And I noticed a girl sitting all by herself on the bottom bench. So I sat down next to her and turned to her and said, Hey, are you new? Are you a freshman? To which she turned to me, gave me the dirtiest look and said, no, I'm a senior. And she got up and walked away. So there I sat all by myself throughout that assembly and was so grateful. When it was over. Now, another thing that I was concerned about this day was how many times would I bump into this old friend? Was she going to confront me? What would I say to her? Would I have the courage to tell her I couldn't be her friend anymore? So I was very relieved when I walked into first period and that old friend wasn't there. But I didn't have any new friends either, so I just stayed to myself., I went on to second period, and noticed that one of the girls from first period was also in my second period class. Went on to third period, and there she was again. Fourth period, same thing, this same bright, cheerful girl. And we both turn to each other and we're like, Hey, we've seen each other in all the same classes so far. That's funny. We ended up having the same lunch and that same pattern continued for the rest of the day. By the end of the day, realized we had every single class together. Identical schedules. Not only that, I had not seen my old friend a single time that day. We were in a pretty small school but we did not have any classes together. I also discovered that I somehow, by some mistake, lucked out as a freshman to get a locker in the main breezeway and a top locker where my new friend was assigned a locker that was way out of the way. So I asked her if she wanted to share a locker with me. And that was the end of that. We quickly became best friends. And remained best friends throughout high school. She was one of my bridesmaids. And we are close friends to this day. As I look back on that experience as an adult, I am so grateful for the lesson that I learned that God is well aware of our circumstances of our prayers before we even speak them and has set things in place to bring miracles into our lives through our faith. He answers our prayers in bigger ways than we could even imagine. All I wanted was courage and a friend. And he answered in a bigger way than I even thought possible. President Russell M. Nelson said Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God, the Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this church in majesty and glory. when I first heard the prophet say this, I was like, pick me. I am in. If he is performing some of his mightiest works and miracles, I want to be there for it. I want to experience some of these. But these mighty works aren't just going to happen. In Matthew 13, verse 58, it says, and he did not many mighty works because of their unbelief. In Ether 12. 12, it says, For if there be no faith among the children of men, God can do no miracle among them. So, the fact that we've been promised marvelous works and miracles tells me we have got some amazing faith here. Who's it gonna be with that kind of faith? You? Me? You. Why not? Let's do this. But the thing is, as I go back and think to those people who responded, that they couldn't think of any mercies in their life, any miracles. Sometimes when we feel we haven't received any miracles, it's because We haven't been asking for the thing that might require a miracle. Miracles can't happen if we don't set goals that require miracles, express desires that require miracles, pray for the kind of help that requires miracles. So if you haven't witnessed a miracle in your life lately, it might be because God is waiting for you to do that scary thing that will take you from your comfort zone and require his miracles to accomplish my favorite example of someone who did something that required a miracle. Is the brother of Jared in the book of Ether in the book of Mormon, a short recap of this, the brother of Jared was leading his family on an incredible journey towards the promised land. But when they got to the seashore, they set up camp and they just decided to stay there. and believe me, I don't blame them. I wouldn't mind staying on the beacH. but God let Jared know it was time to move on, that he had more of a journey for him, and it would end in many beautiful promises, including the promised land. God directed him on how to build ships that would take them across the ocean to the Americas. Amazing ships, but there was a problem. There was no air and there was no light. God immediately gave him a solution to the no air problem, but the brother of Jared had to ask again, what about light? To which God responded in a way that I haven't seen in other places in the scriptures, he said, what will you that I should do that ye may have light in your vessels? So he was putting the solution back on to the brother of Jared. And so the brother of Jared came up with the solution, and did molten out of a rock, 16 small stones, and they were white and clear. And he decided that he would ask God to touch these stones to make them shine with light. He then approached God in prayer and not only did God provide this miracle, but the brother of Jared was able to see the finger of God and God showed his complete self to the brother of Jared because of his faith, along with many greater things. Okay, that is the short of it, but I want to break this down a little bit with you because there are so many neat things that we can learn to help us bring miracles into our lives through this story. Number one. Just like God was miraculously directing and guiding the brother Jared, preparing him for a journey ahead with many promises. God does the same for us. He is always preparing us for a journey ahead of us. And offering many promises that will be given in miraculous ways. but do we have the eyes to see the miraculous Ways God has guided our lives up until now because that is faith We will need to proceed with even more miracles to come I think most people would say, I believe in miracles, but when push comes to shove, are we saying, yeah, I believe in miracles for everyone else. Just, not for me. In speaking about the Brother of Jared, Elder Holland explained, The Lord had done his part, miraculously, profoundly, ingeniously. Unique resolutely seaworthy ships for crossing the ocean had been provided. The brilliant engineering had been done. The hard part of this construction project was over. Now, he wanted to know what the brother of Jared would do about the incidentals. close quote And isn't that what our lives are like? God has done his part, is doing his part in our lives in miraculously, profoundly ingenious ways. All the brilliant engineering of our lives has been done. And God wants to give us the opportunity to do Our part, what miracles are we going to bring into our lives for the incidentals I believe that the incredible faith the brother Jared had Came from his ability to see the miracles that had already happened in his life up until then our lives are divinely designed. It is up to us to see it. Number two, despite being guided by God in miraculous ways, the brother of Jared was facing a problem just because there's miracles doesn't mean we aren't going to face obstacles. In fact, obstacles are often the opportunities for miracles. And here's another really cool thing about obstacles and miracles shown by Alma and Amulek in Alma 8 31. It talks about how Alma and Amulek were given this power that they could not be confined in dungeons and no one could slay them. But listen to this. It says, nevertheless, they did not exercise their power until they were bound in bands and cast into prison. Now if this was me, I'd be like, Hmm, how about let's make it so I never have to be in prison and never bound in bands. But why did they wait for the miracle? It says right in the next line. Now, this was done that the Lord might show forth his power in them. When we face something difficult, many times we want to jump ship before it gets really hard. But honestly, it's in the hard that God's miracles are made manifest where he's able to show how powerful he truly is. Christ said something similar to this When he was told that Lazarus was sick in John 11 four, he said, this sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. God wants to show his people that he is truly a God of miracles. And when we submit to him, his power can be shown in great measure through us. Even the Savior was the perfect example of this. In D& C 1919, it says, Nevertheless, glory be to the Father. And I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men. Glory to the Father because he was the one who prepared Christ and gave him the strength to perform his task. He gave him miracles so that he could perform the greatest miracle ever given. As he suffered for our sins to redeem us all. And so for us, glory to the father in our own lives, who shows forth his strength in us as we believe in, ask for, and are willing to receive his power. He has prepared for each of us a unique task. That task will include obstacles, but he will provide. Miracles for us. So understanding that you almost want to say, okay, bring on the obstacles. Because by saying that you're basically saying, bring on the miracles. President Spencer W. Kimball said, there are great challenges ahead of us. Giant opportunities to be met. I welcome that exciting prospect and feel to say to the Lord, humbly,‘Give me this mountain,’ give me these challenges.. Close quote. Now, I don't know if I am brave enough to say that, but if we look back to that original quote, I said at the beginning of this podcast, remember what president Nelson said. Than realizing the Lord is helping you to move a mountain in your life. This spiritual momentum, this help from the Lord, what's the point if there's no mountain to move? There is no doubt that this obstacle the brother of Jared faced was actually a great blessing in his life. The third thing we can learn from this story to bring more miracles into our lives is looking at how. The brother of Jared approached God for this miracle. He approached him in prayer. Isn't it interesting that prayer is one of those primary answers that we are asked and told to do all the time. Read your scriptures, say your prayers, go to church. I think we forget how incredibly powerful prayer is and how important it is for us to increase the power of prayer. of our prayers if we go backtrack a little bit in ether to when the brother of Jared was just hanging out on the beach, the Lord came to the brother of Jared and chastened him for three hours. I don't know about you. But, yeah, I've been chastened by the Lord before. Three hours? No. Thank goodness. But what was so important that the brother of Jared got a three hour chastening? Well, he chastened him because he remembered not to call upon the name of the Lord. The brother of Jared had stopped praying. It was also profound to me that our dear elder Holland, after not being able to speak to us in general conference for one and a half years and having an experience that was beyond the veil, What did he feel was the most important thing? The most important message he could give us. It was all. prayer, and when it comes to powerful prayer, He said, when we don't know how or exactly for what to pray, we should begin and continue until the Holy Spirit guides us into the prayer we should be offering. Close quote many times we aren't even sure of the miracle, the mercy we should be asking for. But if we approach prayer in this way, we can have confidence that the Holy Spirit will let us know. In fact, as Elder Holland said this, the spirit taught me something else. I realized, wow, we pray to Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ. We all know this, pretty basic, but truly powerful prayer includes all three members of the Godhead. President Russell M. Nelson said, We pray to our Father in the name of Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Ghost. This is the true order of prayer. Close quote we also know that this kind of prayer is important and powerful because prayer is what was used by our Savior, Jesus Christ, as he atoned for our sins, as he performed the greatest miracle in all eternity. If you read in Luke 22, you see that not only did he pray, Over and over again, but he also asked his disciples to be praying during this time. And when his suffering became even worse, he prayed all the more in verse 44, it says, and being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. President Thomas S. Monson said, To those within the sound of my voice who are struggling with challenges and difficulties large and small, prayer is the provider of spiritual strength. It is the passport to peace. Prayer is the means by which we approach our Father in Heaven who loves us. Speak to him in prayer, and then listen for the answer, miracles are wrought through prayer. Close quote. Number four. Just as the brother of Jared had to do his part in the miracle, so do we. For me, so often, when things get hard, my prayer is like, Just take this from me. But, that's not really how it works. Elder Cornish said, Often, as I pray, the Lord nudges me to admit that there is more I should do to receive the help I am asking for from the Lord. Then I must commit to do my part. It is contrary to the economy of heaven for the Lord to do for us that which we can do for ourselves. Close quote. So it helps to brainstorm a little bit. What obstacle am I facing right now? Is there a problem, a situation that I am just accepting? Imagine the Lord asking you what you would have him do, and start coming up with some solutions. But as you're thinking of those solutions, don't forget this fifth principle we learned from the brother of Jared. The brother of Jared came up with a solution that would only work for you. If the Lord was involved, yes, the brother of Jared worked and did his part to molten these stones, and even though those stones were probably pretty, they were absolutely useless without a miracle. So should we come up with solutions that require the touch of God? So again, we can brainstorm and ask ourselves, where in my life am I relying on my own strength too much? Are you picking the solution that feels doable, logical, that is within your own power requiring nobody else's help, including God's. What have we just accepted in our lives when we could be asking for the Lord's help? And where do we get this from? This desire to, to muscle through, to do it on our own. Think about this comparison between Satan or Lucifer and Jesus Christ. Heavenly Father came up with a plan, but, there was an obstacle that needed a solution. He needed someone who was willing to suffer for the sins of the world. What was Satan's response? Well, first of all, he decided to come up with his own plan. own plan rather than go with God's and he said, I will do it he didn't want God's help. He didn't want God's miracles because he did not want God to have any glory. He wanted the glory for himself. Not to compare anyone to Satan, but do you see how he kind of gets his ideas into our heads where we're presented with a problem and. Instead of turning to God to help us with that solution, we come up with our idea. We decide I can do this. And when we achieve it, who are we patting on the back? Ourselves. And how much better could it have been if we turned to God? Now let's look at the Savior's example in this situation. What did he do? He accepted God's plan and said, Thy will be done, glory be thine forever. This is the example we want to follow. Seeking God's will, doing it in his perfect and beautiful way, even when it doesn't completely make sense to us, but trusting that it will work. As we follow the Savior's example, we will be able to say the glory be thine forever because God's love, power, miracles will be shown through us. Just as they were shown through Jesus Christ and we truly become his work and his Glory, so like the brother of Jared being willing to prepare these stones that would have zero purpose Without a miracle. What will we have the faith to do the faith to prepare the faith to create knowing? That it will be a miracle Completely useless without God's hand. Last but not least, let's not forget that When the brother of Jared had the faith to go to the Lord for this one thing, he got a lot more than what was expected. Brother of Jared needed was light. He asked for physical light, which he was given. But even more precious and powerful was the spiritual light that was given to him. I love the symbolism that he needed light on his journey. Similarly, light is the most powerful thing. We could ask for on our journey, what light do you need? And just like the brother of Jared, as we ask for what we need temporally, it will lead to greater things that we need temporarily. Spiritually, our faith for one small thing will lead to more than we can imagine. Ether four seven says, and in that day, now remember anytime it says in the scriptures in that day, it's talking about our day. So this verse is for you in that day that they shall exercise faith in me, saith the Lord, even as the brother of Jared did, that they may become sanctified in me. Then I will manifest unto them the things which the brother of Jared saw, even to the unfolding unto them all my revelations. Receiving the light of Christ is truly one of the most The greatest miracles we could receive. Do you know what's interesting about the quote from president Nelson, where he said that Christ would perform some of his mightiest works between now and when he comes again, that quote ends with this sentence, but in the coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence. It's so neat how this all works hand in hand. God wants us to come to him seeking his mercies, his miracles, his power, glorifying him through our faith, letting his works be manifested through us. And at the same time, as we do that, we are learning revelation. We are learning that influence of the Holy Ghost that will guide our prayers, that will lead us to greater things. How generous God is. He gives us more than we could ever ask for. So again, I ask, what are you desperate for in this miraculous, but sometimes difficult journey? The brother of Jared was without light. What are you without? What are you willing to ask God for now before I end things? I want to address those of you that are doubting your faith and worth right now that you could actually Ask for these things. I want you to remember again where the brother of Jared was, right before all these miracles happened. Remember, he was being chastened by the Lord for three hours, because he was not praying. Yet, the Lord asked him to repent, and shortly after, He started receiving all these miracles. It is truly simple as that. Repent, come to the Lord, and know that He wants so much for you. He is waiting for you to ask. So I've already talked about several different questions you could possibly ask, but I would just want to share with you the one question that was the most powerful for me. It came from an insight from Elder Bednar where he was talking about prayer. And mentioning that sometimes we offer prayers, almost like a shopping list. I need this, I need this, I need this, but instead of asking for all the things we think we want for ourselves, do we ever stop to ask God, what do you want for me? So my favorite question adds just one word to that. What miracles do you want? Do you want for me? God wants to show you what your life can be when it is multiplied by His power. Have courage to do the thing that requires a miracle. Ask Him what miracle He wants for you. Christ is the miracle. Christ is hope. Smiling brightly.
