[00:00:00] Sherry Dew said, as soon as we the sisters of this church commit fully to this work, it will explode in an unprecedented way. Because of our unique nurturing influence and because of the spirit that attends righteous women, it will flourish because youth who see their mothers and leaders fearlessly sharing the gospel will do.

Likewise. Welcome to the Hope Smiling Brightly podcast, sharing stories and ideas that will empower you to overcome doubt, cultivate the kind of faith miracles are made of, and experience the transformative grace of Christ, whatever it is. Christ is the answer. I'm your host Amber, also known as at Amber Don Pierce on social media, hopefully most especially known as someone who loves to share the light of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

You are listening to episode [00:01:00] 16, keeping Our Lamps trimmed and burning. Wow. So much to think about from the last episode. I don't know about you guys, but the wheels have been turning in my mind and I have loved the ideas you have shared in comments as to what it might symbolize to trim our wicks. Thank you so much for joining the conversation in our community on social media and for sharing this podcast with your friends and family, and for subscribing and leaving your reviews.

I sincerely appreciate you and hope these messages reach those who could be blessed by them. It has also been fun to hear from those of you who have reserved your spot on the Alaskan cruise that will be going on together summer of 2026. I can't wait to hang out with all of you as we see some of the most beautiful sites on earth.

And of course, I'll be presenting several times on our days at sea. There are still some open spots, so go [00:02:00] to bountiful travel.com to learn more. And I will leave a link in the show notes Before we jump in. I forgot to mention that the last podcast episode and this one are a very extended version of what I taught at BY U'S Women's Conference.

I promised you guys, I would share with you what I taught there. So here it is. And of course I have to say that this is not endorsed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or by BYU, but I'm happy that I can share some of the same things I taught there here with you. So at the end of the last episode, I promised to share with you some of my insights when it comes to trimming our lamps so that we can avoid that dim, smoky, ragged flame that is inefficient.

Burns out and instead produce a controlled, clean, bright, even long-lasting flame. It's [00:03:00] helpful to remember what the wick was made of as we ponder this. The wick was made of linen. The fabric used to wrap the body of Christ, the fabric used in ancient temple garments. The fabric that the bride symbolizing the Lord's church will be clothed in at the marriage supper symbolizing the second coming, the fabric symbolizing.

The righteousness of saints to be clothed in righteousness is to be clothed in covenants with Christ. Couple our covenants with our unique experiences and the gifts we've been given and within that is great power for light. If there's anything that I have learned from this study, it is truly how important the unique light that we shine.

Actually is all the times that we've been told, we are chosen noble and great vital to God's work. Man, [00:04:00] they were not kidding. It is not to be taken lightly in all humility and through sacrifice. Our covenant light of Christ cannot. Be replicated and it will burn ever brighter As a beacon, as we recognize and fully step into our roles as women in Zion, president Emily Bell Freeman said, we must remember that we belong here.

Among the great ones, the givers of life, the vessels of sacrifice, the testifiers of redemption. The witnesses of Christ, the keepers of the covenant, we are those women. This is our time. I hope the power of this truth is radiating from your headphones, your speakers, and entering straight into your heart.

[00:05:00] You are needed. Vital essential to this great work. So what hinders this pure light? What do we need to trim off? The most common comment I received was that to trim our lamp was to repent. I absolutely love that idea. It is something President Nelson has asked us to do in finding joy in daily repentance.

And isn't it great that there is no shame in it no matter who you are? We all need that trimming as our light burns. It isn't a one-time thing. We all constantly need to turn to Christ and his power for change as we constantly burn our light. Another common comment was that we need to trim worldly things from our lives.

This is another thing President Nelson has asked us to do, to put aside many things of this world, to examine our lives meticulously and regularly. [00:06:00] Let the Holy Spirit show us what is no longer needful, what is no longer worthy of our time and energy. Perhaps this is what our prophet has been doing since the moment he was called, showing us how to keep our lamps trimmed and burning in preparation for the second coming.

In fact, the first thing that came to my mind when I pondered the possible symbolism of trimming was something President Nelson most recently taught. It certainly has been one of the biggest causes of my own. Somewhat dim and ragged light sometimes. Remember what he spoke about in April, 2025, having confidence before God.

He said, disciples of Jesus Christ have access to a different kind of confidence. And why is this? Because we have made. Covenants. I spent years struggling to find this confidence for myself, overcome with thoughts of doubt [00:07:00] concerning my worth and ability to accomplish God's purpose. For me to consecrate all that I was given, shine my covenant light.

But President Nelson said, we can have quote confidence that God yearns to help each of us reach our highest potential. Close quote, he explained that the key to this is adding virtue, which by definition is power. Two are thoughts and he promised that virtue will drive away Those depressive thoughts virtue will free you from anxious, troublesome thoughts This.

Is what I want to focus on for the rest of our time together today. How to trim away thoughts that keep us from sharing our covenant light. So let's go over some of these common thoughts, trim them off and replace them with a thought filled with power. [00:08:00] AKA. Virtue. A side note here is that these thoughts can apply to any prompting to share a light in any way, great or small.

And the ways we are going to be asked to share a light will most often be small and simple ways. One prompting at a time. And we will most likely have to trim our wick of discouraging thoughts that try to stop us every single time. Alright, let's trim our wicks and let our covenant light influence others for good.

We are gonna trim away, doubt, fear, comparison, self-criticism. Most of the thoughts we need to trim off. Start with what if. Sometimes when we receive a prompting, we wonder what if. I am just crazy. It's pretty normal to question a prompting right after we receive it, but let's trim that thought off and replace it [00:09:00] with virtue.

What if you are being called, you're not crazy. In Joel 2 28 it says, and it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon. All flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. Your old men shall dream dreams. Your young men shall see visions and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids.

In those days, will I pour out my spirit? This was the scripture that the Angel Morna quoted to. The prophet Joseph Smith and told him that this was about to come to pass. So you are not crazy. You are called. Gifts of the Holy Spirit are being poured out upon us in preparation for the second coming. God is calling you.

Perhaps this is a part of what the prophet was talking about when he prophesied that Jesus Christ will perform some of his mightiest works [00:10:00] between now and when he comes again. We are his work and his glory after all. It would make sense that these mighty works would happen through the miraculous power and gifts he pours out upon his children.

But what if I embarrass myself, make mistakes, get it wrong? Well, I can pretty much guarantee you will. Um, I have a little story to share with you of how I completely embarrassed myself in trying to do what I have been called to do. Uh, if any of you happen to be some of the first listeners when I.

Published my last podcast, you got to hear nine seconds of me taking a drink and burping. Isn't that great? I completely missed editing out that one segment of my podcast, [00:11:00] much to my horror. And the funny thing is that is not the first time I have done that. But what is interesting is that people didn't make comments about the Burp, though they did make comments about what they learned about Christ.

Instead of asking, what if I embarrass myself? Consider this. What if it isn't about you? The woman at the well is the perfect example of this. Think about it. She had every reason to be embarrassed to feel shame. She was feeling it. That's why she was at the well in the middle of the day to avoid people.

But as soon as she received a witness of Christ, there was nothing. That could stop her. She didn't care what other people thought. She ran and she told everyone that she could [00:12:00] about Jesus Christ. But listen to this neat scripture, what the people said after they had heard about Christ from her John 4 42.

It says, now we believe not because of thy saying. For we have heard him ourselves and know that this is indeed the Christ, the savior of the world. It is all about Christ. You are bringing people to hear him, to witness of his love, and that is what they will remember and focus on not the mistakes. They will be too excited about Christ to notice or even care.

About your imperfections, but what if I don't know how to do this thing God is asking of me? Let's trim away that thought. What's a virtuous one? What if God will show me? Here are some great verses from one Nephi chapter 17 and 18, but you might notice [00:13:00] some minor edits that I've made. Thou sh share your gifts after the manner which I shall show thee.

If the Lord has such great power and has wrought so many miracles among the children of men, how is it that he cannot instruct you, that you should build your gifts? And I did not work on my gifts after the manner which was learned by men. Neither did I build my gifts after the manner of men, but I did build it after the manner which the Lord had shown unto me.

And I did go into the mount oft and I did pray oft unto the Lord. Wherefore the Lord showed unto me great things. And it came to pass that after I had finished my work, according to the word of the Lord, my brethren beheld that it was good and that the workmanship thereof was exceedingly fine. If you truly want to cultivate your ability to receive revelation like never before, do something you have no [00:14:00] clue how to do.

If no one ever even listened to this podcast. I would still be grateful for all it has taught me about how to receive God's word for me. It is hands down my favorite part of seeking hearing and answering a call from God. I promise nothing will bring revelation, like stepping out of your comfort zone, however great or small, and do something you have absolutely no idea how to do.

I personally have not taken one single training on how to podcast or how to share on Instagram. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to seek training. I'm just saying don't overcomplicate it. You don't have to do be, you don't have to be a pro to do [00:15:00] whatever God is asking. The Lord can direct you and will direct you in all things.

It will require seeking. But the result will be better than anything you can imagine. But what if I lose friends? Yeah. People aren't always gonna like the light we shine. They might envy it or might not like how we are changing. But truly what we imagine in our heads is usually a lot worse than reality.

So rather than worrying about losing friends, think about the. What if in this journey you are able to find what is lost? Bear with me as I get my point across about an innate ability we have as women by describing what you might see. If you were to look inside my refrigerator on any given day. If you open up my refrigerator door, [00:16:00] you'll find two of pretty much everything.

Two bottles of ketchup, two bottles of mustard. Two bottles of barbecue sauce. It drives me crazy. Why is this the case? Well, because I live in a house of boys who when they open up the refrigerator and can't find something and mom isn't home to help them locate it, they just go into the pantry and open up another bottle.

Moms. Women, we know how to find things. It's one of those innate gifts we have. As my mom would say, we have a built in. Honing device, but there is something much more important to find than condiments. Just as a shepherd leaves his flock. To find the one, we must leave our comfort zone to find what is lost through the gifts we've been given and what helps someone who is lost.

Light. [00:17:00] You can be that light. You must be that light. It is your divine endowment. I was able to witness of this truth when I first started answering God's call for me to share online. Even though I had been pretty good at ignoring promptings, there was one morning that I could not ignore them anymore. I was driving down the road when thoughts just downloaded right into my brain.

Along with this urgency that I needed to record these thoughts that very day and get them posted. So as soon as I got home, I got to work. I had no idea what I was doing though I had never recorded or edited video. I had never posted a reel before on Instagram. It took me. Five hours to record and edit one 92nd reel.

[00:18:00] By the time I was done, I was literally shaking in frustration and with anxiety over putting myself out there and. Sharing this post. Finally, I just hit published, put my phone down and walked away. I decided to go and work on cooking dinner just to get my mind off things from just the stress of it all, and I said a little prayer.

I was like, heavenly Father, you asked me to do this. I did it, and now it's in your hands. Please just send that video to whoever it was that needed to hear it. Well, I kid you not. 10 minutes later, my phone started to ring. I picked it up and on the other line was someone who I love dearly that I hadn't heard from in quite some time, and she had a sound of urgency in her voice.

She said, Amber, just today I was talking [00:19:00] to my mom about my testimony and how there is one. Piece of doctrine that is unique to our church that has. Kept me holding on to my faith, but I was kind of wondering if it was worth it to hang on just for this one piece of doctrine. And I just picked my phone and I was scrolling through Instagram and you video popped up and you were talking about that one piece of doctrine, that very piece that I had just been thinking about.

Today and it was like God was telling me that, yes, it is worth it to stay. I was overwhelmed with gratitude and awe of how God will take what we do and he will create the miracles. Whatever the task, whatever the gift, just act. [00:20:00] God will do the rest. Now, of course I use sharing online as an example just because that is what God has asked of me.

So I'm not saying, saying that that is what everyone else has to do, but rest assured there is something needed of you. President Nelson said, you have a divine endowment that allows you to literally change lives. I bless you to realize that your divine gifts as a daughter of God give you the power, not only to change lives, but to change the world.

A gathering of Israel is the most important work on the earth. Anytime we help anyone find the covenant path and stay on it, we are helping to gather Israel. No one does this better than you. Please never underestimate the extraordinary power within you to influence others for good. It is a gift with which our Heavenly Father has endowed every covenant woman.[00:21:00]

Live up to your divine privileges. You are vital to the kingdom Now. So how about some thoughts that are very specific to women that we might need to trim off? Here's one that I often had. What if I fail as a mother if I try to do more than be a mother? Elder m Russell Ballard said, is a woman's value dependent exclusively upon her role as wife and mother.

The answer is simple and obvious. No, although there is nothing a woman can do that has more far reaching eternal impact than to rear her children to walk in righteousness, motherhood and marital status. Are not the only measures of a woman's worth, so let's trim off that thought and replace it with this question that has a lot more power.[00:22:00]

What if my eternal title of mother and innate gifts that come with it will help me to bless my own children? And any children, God chooses to put in my path, whatever I'm asked to do. What if it is all a part of motherhood? Did you know that the Latin spelling of the word mother is nearly the same as matter?

Matter is what all things are made from. Also mud believed to be the substance again, from which all things are made in a biblical sense or mold as in to shape something. Is it any wonder that mother is so close to all these words that are the materials by which anything? [00:23:00] Is made to step into our role as mothers In Zion entails much more than bearing and raising children.

We have an innate responsibility to all of creation as all of creation exists to help us fill the measure of our own creation. It also requires us to turn around and nurture all of creation through our gifts. A beautiful and complete cycle of helping each other in fulfilling what we were created to do.

You know, it's funny, I feel hesitant to even admit this because I still feel a little guilt that there were times in my life in the thick of motherhood that I was. Overwhelmed and unfulfilled. I worried something must be wrong with me, that I felt something was missing even though I loved mothering my children.[00:24:00]

Maybe it was because I was only fulfilling a part of what it is to be a mother. Maybe I didn't understand the complete definition, and there were more things within me waiting to be created to bless and nurture not only my children, but all of God's children. I want to share a bit of my story with you and something that the spirit taught me in a powerful way.

Six years ago, I started having these repeated promptings and glimpses of a work that God had for me, and because of these promptings coupled with promises from my patriarchal blessing. I knew that God was going to open doors for me to, to testify in ways that would magnify the reach of my voice, the win, the how, the where was all very fuzzy, but I knew it would involve me sharing my [00:25:00] testimony to large groups of people.

Sometimes I felt excited and curious, but most of the time I felt. Like it was a little unbelievable and overwhelming. How was I even supposed to make this happen? My life was already full. Why couldn't I just stay in my little comfortable bubble and just do the mom stuff that having five kids required of me?

I was totally good with that, but then again. I wasn't because this nagging feeling would not leave me alone. Still, I knew my most important role was as a mother, and I was afraid of messing up if I did anything else. Finally, I gave up pushing back and felt I needed to take some sort of action to show the Lord that I trusted him.

So I sat down with my scriptures. A pen and paper and said, okay, heavenly [00:26:00] Father, help me set some goals. How, how do I act upon this prompting? And something happened that was very unusual. The spirit was very, very specific in helping me to set a goal. It came to my mind to set a goal to speak three times, and then I asked, okay, there should probably be a deadline.

What? What's my deadline? In immediately into my mind came. April general conference, and this was about January. I didn't know how it happened, but I was confident that it would, 'cause I had never felt so directed in such a specific goal that I would speak three times before general conference. Well, guess what?

This happens to be January of 2020 and we all know what happened. The world shut down. [00:27:00] There weren't any meetings happening. There weren't any opportunities for me to speak or so I thought the months passed and. It was the Sunday before general conference and the goal that I had kind of brushed aside 'cause I was like, well, this isn't gonna happen.

Popped into my mind. And again, a little confusion set in. 'cause I was like, why would the spirit give me such a specific goal? I mean, God knew that everything was gonna shut down, so why did I receive that prompting? And then in that moment. The Spirit brought another thing into my mind that very Sunday was the third Sunday that we had home church.

It was the third Sunday that I was the one [00:28:00] bearing testimony to my children, and in that moment, the spirit. Clarified to me a very important truth that whatever doors the Lord would open up for me to testify to people, the most important people I would ever testify to would be my own children. And that I could never forget that.

And hindsight, I am truly stunned at the doors that have been opened to me, but I have constantly had to evaluate and keep myself in check so that I don't forget my primary and most important role to teach and nurture my own children first and [00:29:00] foremost. When it comes to motherhood, I feel the pendulum has swung.

Too far in both directions. First, the adversary convincing women that their worth was strictly limited to how well they could do tasks only within the framework of home, limiting the definition of motherhood to make it feel stifling so that a rebellion could be created in the opposite direction.

Convincing women. That motherhood was something to overcome and true self-worth, potential fulfillment could only be found outside the home and with an inward focus, the ultimate purpose to erase true eternal motherhood because it's way too powerful for Satan and his minions. Christ teaches in Matthew 10 39.

He that findeth his life shall lose [00:30:00] it and he that loseth his life, for my sake, shall find it true fulfillment. Our true selves can only be found within the eternal definition of motherhood. Eternal motherhood means first. Nurturing the lives and responsibilities God has placed directly in our care, and then letting those same gifts reach outward to bless all of his creations.

It's not limited to. Raising children. Every woman with or without children is called to live with the spirit of motherhood in everything she does. As we step into this eternal role, we awaken our God-given influence and power, and that is how we prepare the world for the Savior's return. It is no wonder that Sherry do said as mothers in Israel.[00:31:00]

We are the Lord's secret weapon, but what if my role as a woman isn't as significant as that of a man? I really hope I've addressed and helped with this thought in my past podcast episodes, but. If we need more evidence, consider this in Alma chapter 19. King LA was carried away in God for three days.

Experiencing and seeing things of the eternities that we can only imagine. But when he woke up, he immediately turned to his wife. Listen to this in verse 12, and it came to pass that he arose according to the words of am, amen. And as he arose, he stretched forth his hand unto the woman. Now, of all the things he could have possibly expressed [00:32:00] after this incredible experience, he chose to testify.

Of just a few incredibly significant things. He said, first, blessed be the name of God. And then to his wife, a woman, he said, blessed art thou for as sure as thou li this. Behold, I have seen my redeemer and he shall come forth and be born of a woman. Right there. In his words, the first thing he chose to testify of was the blessedness of women.

I believe he was shown and understood. What I doubt we could fully comprehend when it comes to the blessedness of women. But what if other women aren't doing what I [00:33:00] am being asked to do? This can be another thought that we need to trim off it. It's part of that comparison. And boy was it assembling block for me looking at other women and their lives to make excuses as to how I was or wasn't living mine.

Not trying something because I was afraid I wouldn't be as good as another woman that I envied or thinking my effort was only good if it was better than someone else's. Yeah, a little pride there. And even as I. Received more promptings. I started to look at the mothers around me to try and figure out if that was a correct prompting.

I would bounce from mother to mother, uh, to try and determine the kind of mother that I should be if I came across someone who successfully balanced many different pursuits. I [00:34:00] decided it was okay for me to do the same. Then I would look at a mom who just seemed to thrive on everything, home and mother, and I thought maybe I should be more like that.

I was in constant turmoil. Comparing yourself to other women or men, you won't get any closer to figuring out your unique purpose. What is that saying, bloom where you. Are planted. Don't try to do what someone else is doing and to discover your unique path and purpose. You will not find it by looking horizontally to everyone around you.

You will only find it if you look up vertically to Christ. He can show you. Sister Julie B. Beck said, we know we are daughters of God and we know what we are to do. Women find true happiness [00:35:00] when they understand and delight in their unique role within the plan of salvation. Close quote, here's another, what if, but I don't hold the priesthood.

What if I don't have the power necessary or my power isn't as significant? Well, what if you are endowed with all the power you need? Here are three quotes from members of the first presidency that I will use to drive this point home and leave it there. First President DH Oak said our willingness to take upon us his name signifies our willingness to take upon us the authority of Jesus Christ in the sacred ordinances of the temple.

And to receive the highest blessings available through his authority when he chooses to confer them upon us. And then President [00:36:00] Nelson said, you may take upon you the holy name of the Lord. You can qualify to speak in the sacred name. Of God and President Ironing actually expounded upon this quote by President Nelson by explaining, speaking for him requires a prayer of faith.

It takes fervent prayer to Heavenly Father to learn what words we could speak to help the savior in his work. We must qualify for the promise that whether by my own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same. Close quote, but what if it has already been done? Let's replace that with virtue.

What if it hasn't been done by you? I will never forget a story told by Sister Sharon Eubank during a woman's conference, and the lesson that it taught me, maybe you'll remember it. On a sunny day on a beach in Florida, a mother noticed two of her [00:37:00] children struggling in the water, and so she went out into the water to try to save them and got caught.

A riptide and one by one other members of the family went out into the water to try and save those who were drowning, and they all got caught in that same riptide until there were nine people out in the water. Struggling to keep their heads above water, struggling to get to shore. Someone called 9 1 1 and a rescue boat had been promised, but it was nowhere in sight and these people were starting to go under because they had been treading water for almost an hour.

Finally, a woman on the beach took action. She started gathering people and telling them to form a human chain out into the ocean. She knew how to swim out of a riptide, and so [00:38:00] after a. Forming this human chain of 80 people. She got on a boogie board and swam out to the ocean and grabbed the drowning people one by one, and brought them to this human chain.

And then each of those 80 people, one by one, helped each of these drowning people all the way to shore. There are people drowning. All around us. We can look on and wait and hope for someone to rescue or we can do something ourselves. There are children whose mothers are desperate for someone to reach their child, and they will be eternally grateful when you take action and do that very thing.

The mother who was stuck in the riptide with her children was quoted as saying God's angels were in the right [00:39:00] place at the right time. Without them, we wouldn't be here. We truly can be those angels for each other. Every single person in that 80 person chain was vital. Jesus can do the work of getting his children out of that rip current and to that chain.

He can put us in the path of those people who are drowning, but. He can't if we aren't there and willing to take action. He will inspire you with your own unique experiences and gifts on what to do and where to be to help those. Who are drowning? What if it is hard? We as humans, we naturally crave hard things.

We, we crave and thrive on change and growth and progression. But even then, in the hard, there is always. Hope and who so receives you there. I will [00:40:00] be also for, I will go before your face. I'll be on your right hand and on your left, and my spirit shall be in your hearts and mine Angels ran about you to bear you up.

What is the point of angels if we aren't willing to go and do things that will require the help of angels as we fully step into our role as women in Zion? The promise God made to Enoch in his efforts to. Create Zion are also ours. He said to Enoch in Moses six and he says this to us, go forth and do as I have commanded thee and no man shall pierce thee.

Open thy mouth and it shall be filled. And I will give the utterance for all flesh is in my hands and I will do as seeth me. Good. Say unto this, people choose. Ye this day to serve the Lord God who made you. Behold my spirit is upon you. Wherefore, all thy words will I justify. And the mountains shall flee before you and the rivers shall turn [00:41:00] from their course and thou shall abide in me and I in you.

Therefore, walk with me. Well, I truly hope you've been able to mentally trim away. Some of the thoughts that have been threatening to extinguish your flame. As President Nelson said, it is mentally rigorous to strive to look unto him in every thought, but when we do our doubts and fears flee, each of you are a chosen vessel.

To help bring Christ into this world before the second coming, fill yourselves with the fuel of the enabling power of the atonement of Jesus Christ. Discover your inherent gifts and share them with the world through the power of your covenant relationship with Christ. Trim doubts from your lamp. Shine the covenant light of Christ before we go.

Here's the question that you might ask [00:42:00] God, as you ponder upon these things. What thoughts do I need to trim outta my life so I can be a brighter light, a better influence? What virtue can I add to my thoughts? Christ is virtue. Christ is hope, smiling brightly.
